About this painting
Painted in Paris in December 1887, this still life (55 x 46.5 cm) combines a plaster Venus torso Van Gogh had studied in Cormon's studio with a rose and copies of Goncourt's Germinie Lacerteux and Maupassant's Bel-Ami. It is held by the Kroller-Muller Museum.
