Garden of Saint-Paul Hospital, The
Vincent van Gogh · 1889
About this painting
Painted in October 1889, this asylum garden scene takes an unusual viewpoint beside the hospital wall along a diagonal path with a stone bench; Van Gogh told Bernard its red-ochre and greyed-green palette evoked 'a feeling of anxiety.'
