Gustave Caillebotte
1848–1894
Trained as an engineer, Caillebotte painted Paris's new boulevards and iron bridges with an almost architectural precision unusual among his Impressionist peers. He was also the group's quiet benefactor, buying paintings from his struggling friends and eventually leaving his collection to the French state.
