Édouard Manet
1832–1883
Manet never joined the Impressionist exhibitions, preferring the official Salon, but his loose brushwork and modern subjects made him a hero to the younger painters who did. Paintings like Olympia scandalized critics for depicting contemporary Parisian life without the flattering polish expected of fine art.
