Edgar Degas
1834–1917
Degas preferred to call himself a realist, not an Impressionist, and worked mostly indoors from memory rather than outdoors from life. Ballet dancers, racehorses, and Parisian cafés were his recurring subjects, rendered with an eye for unusual angles borrowed from photography and Japanese prints.
