Alfred Sisley
1839–1899
Sisley stayed truer to pure landscape than almost any other Impressionist, painting the Seine and its villages in every season and weather. British by descent but French by upbringing, he never gained the recognition of his friends Monet and Renoir during his lifetime — his quiet river scenes only found wide appreciation after his death.
